Abstract

HIV/AIDS The long road to vaccines Two pieces in this issue focus on what must be one of the top priorities in science today: the quest for a viable HIV/AIDS vaccine. Dan Barouch's Review Article charts the trials and tribulations of work that has so far led only to failed vaccine candidates. Barouch argues that HIV-1 vaccine science is still in its infancy, and that a renewed emphasis on basic discovery research is needed if the field is to advance. Ruslan Medzhitov and Dan Littman also stress the need for basic research, principally in immunology, where some of the established models and assumptions may simply not be relevant to retroviral infections.
