Liquid crystal ‘blue phases’ with a wide temperature range

Abstract

Into the blue Liquid crystal blue phases are complex three-dimensional fluid phases, with a characteristic defect period of the order of the wavelength of light. They act like tunable photonic crystals, which would be very useful. But so far, poor thermal stability has limited their practical potential. A new family of blue phases, stable between 16 °C and 60 °C, could change all that.
