The Early History of Nominal Wage Rigidity in American Industrial Labor Markets

Abstract

Questo saggio esamina la prima fase della storia della rigidità ciclica dei salari sul mercato del lavoro industriale americano, servendosi di dati tratti dall'Aldrich Report dal 1840 al 1891. Stimando un modello sulla base dell'assunzione di cointegrazione fra prezzi e salari, la flessibilità dei salari non risulta in calo nella seconda metà del secolo XIX. I salari non erano più flessibili neppure in precedenza, quando l'adattamento avrebbe dovuto essere meno difficile. Di fatto, essi erano più rigidi prima della Guerra Civile che dopo. Nella seconda metà del XIX secolo la rigidità dei salari nominali dell'industria conobbe vistosi incrementi e decrementi (secondo quanto ha dimostrato Hanes), a differenza di quanto è avvenuto nel XX secolo.
