Basilicata and Blue Economy

Abstract

Given the growing importance to the sea and its wealth, this paper aims to tackle the theme of the maritime economy in Basilicata, with the purpose of enhancing the region through such economy. Currently, although it is centrally located and equidistant from the surrounding seas, it does not make use of its favourable position. This work draws attention to the initiative of the European Commission and to «Blue Growth»; it highlights the interest in aquaculture and fisheries, respecting the natural environment and human health; furthermore, it takes into account the statistical results among Italian regions. Attention is also paid to the Operational Programme for Fisheries and Aquaculture in Basilicata, and the topic of «Blue Economy» in Southern Italy is discussed, with particular regard to the contribution offered by the region analysed. Finally, it highlights that Basilicata, precisely through its limits, can be a positive example of the application of Community measures and the objectives of the Common Fisheries Policy (CFP) without altering their carrying capacity.
