Abstract

The contribution summarizes the main results presented in the Chapter «Women and Work in Southern Italian Regions: An European Issue» of the SVIMEZ 2023 Report. In particular, territorial statistics related to different gender gap indicators are discussed, in light of the two main determinants of the gap identified by most recent economic literature: women’s labor penalization related to parenthood and gender gaps in educational choices. An in-depth discussion is devoted to women skills have accrued in STEM disciplines and the related opportunities to work in sectors with higher productivity and wages.
