Ethnic Identity and the Utilization of Land: A Case Study in Riau, Indonesia

Abstract

The world economic crisis that began in 2008 has focused attention once again on the dilemma of land use in regions like Riau, for oil palm prices have fallen dramatically. This paper looks at the economic and social position of first and second generation transmigrants of Javanese origin in the north-western part of the Province of Riau, Sumatra, in the aftermath of the 1997-98 monetary crisis. The data are from two villages in a transmigration settlement area near Pasir Pangarayan, where several thousand transmigrant families were resettled during the 1980s. It is based on the findings of a study undertaken in 2001 in a transmigration area in the Province of Riau in the context of the International Labour Organization’s InFocus Programme on Socio-Economic Security “Indonesia: Improving Security After the Crises”.
