The Economic and Social Dimensions of Regional Development In Indonesia : A Comment Abstract : It was interesting indeed to read Hill and Williams' article on the Economic and Social Dimensions of Regional Development in Indonesia, (EKI, vol. 37, No. 2). However, the main weakness of the article, as mentioned by the outhors is that it merely tried ". . . to indentify trends and patterns, rather than to explain them." As far as indentifying trends and patterns is concerned there is nothing new in the findings of the aouthors. To a certain extent, the article merely repeated what 1 have done fourteen years ago; either in terms of methodology or the findings. The addition of the social dimensions in the article, to the economic per capita Regional GDP, seems to me, has been forced; without any good reason at all. A more appropriate measure to capture the regional social disparity is perhaps the Physical Quality of Life Index (PQLI) developed by Morris in 1979
