Rural Dinamics: Research on Rural Change

Abstract

Whether Indonesia follows a western model of development or evolves a special approach of its own, change will be the order of the day. Economic development means change and movement, and these in turn mean problems as well as benefits. The more rapid the development, the more likely that economic and social change will also be rapid. "Rapid social change is inevitably accompanied by growing uncetiainlies, disorientation, deep anxieties and fear, leading towards increasing resistance to change". It is the task of a development-oriented government to promote change and to minister to the wounds and painful disruptions which accompany change. Nowhere is this more important than in rural areas where traditional institutions and cherished values are particularly, sensitive to the stresses of modernization.
