Abstract

In this article the author presents the Human Development Indicator (HDI) for four Colombian cities ( Santafé de Bogotá, Medellín, Santiago de Cali and Barranquilla). The HDI is an approximate measure of the living conditions of the population, taking into account economic aspects such as income, and social aspects such as health and education. The United Nations developed a method for estimating HDI in almost every country; in this article the same methodology is applied with a view to comparing human development levels in Colombia. At the same time, HDI contributes to the analysis of social policy within a wide context of development. The analysis of human development poses the discussion about the complementariety between economic growth and the widening of opportunities individuals have to enjoy the benefits of higher per capita income.
