Abstract

In this paper we discuss the empirical fact of spatial markets for bank loans. This phenomenon needs an economic explanation because the transportation of financial services causes extremely low costs, and in many cases these costs are independent of the distance between the bank and their customers. Therefore, transportation cannot be the reason for spatial bank loan markets. For the described phenomenon we assume a spatial diffusion of information about the borrower which is free of charge and spatially limited. With increasing distances between the bank and the location of the borrower this information decreases and causes loan losses or increasing costs of intelligence activities of the bank. In both cases we get a spatial market for bank loans which can be investigated under various conditions. The market results of monopoly and the equilibrium of the oligopolistic market are investigated.
