Abstract

The fuzzy set methodology allows for attaching a poverty intensity grade to every unit. The traditional crisp poverty line in poverty measurement is then evitable. Furthermore this idea can be extended to the multivariate case. Some traditional one-dimensional poverty measures yield a fuzzy reinterpretation, if an appropriate membership function is defined. Two types of desirable properties of membership functions are discussed. For the simpler of these two cases the family of measures proposed by Foster, Greer and Thorbecke (1984) reveals superior. From this result methods of multidimensional poverty measurement can be derived which are very attractive from a viewpoint of application.
