Prácticas predatorias y crédito al consumidor

Abstract

Los consumidores son propensos a contratar créditos predatorios cuando reciben información falsa o incompleta por parte de los intermediarios financieros que los otorgan. En México, la banca de menudeo de segmento bajo, aún fomentando la inclusión financiera, está ligada a varias tiendas comerciales (bancos–tienda) que, debido a la vulnerabilidad de los clientes, pueden implementar prácticas predatorias en relación al financiamiento de los productos. Este trabajo, a través de una muestra de 400 consumidores en la ciudad de Puebla (México), analiza si estas prácticas se asocian con una mayor probabilidad de compra y a las distintas formas de pago utilizadas por los clientes. Los resultados de las estimaciones indican que la falta de transparencia, en torno a las características del producto y en relación al financiamiento proporcionado por el banco–tienda, se asocia con un aumento en la probabilidad de compra/ Consumers are more likely to contract predatory loans when false or incomplete information is provided by financial intermediaries. In Mexico, the retail banking sector, although promoting financial inclusion, is linked to several stores that might implement predatory techniques in selling goods and financing purchases because the vulnerability of their clients. This paper, through a sample of 400 consumers drawn in the city of Puebla (Mexico), examines whether predatory practices are associated with a higher purchasing likelihood through different payment methods. Estimates support that the lack of transparency about product characteristics and banking retail financing, are associated with an increase in the purchasing likelihood
