Abstract

A common assumption, carried over from previous technologies and retained by Askew, Beardwood, and Newby, is questioned. Its elimination would permit existing cab-signaling technology to be used to maximize capacity on high-density railroad routes. But technological and economic ramifications need to be investigated. The authors' reply by J. R. Askew, J. E. Beardwood, and D. Newby of Atomic Energy Establishment, Winfrith, Dorchester, Dorset, U.K. follows.
