Operations Research in National Planning of Underdeveloped Countries

Abstract

The problem of allocation of resources in development planning is treated in the form of a project-selection problem. The main features of the approach are ( a ) It provides for technological feasibility of the development program and satisfies the demand for final consumption (at given prices) at all points of time. ( b ) It yields a number of alternative programs that demonstrate the possible compromises between conflicting objectives of national planning Only “efficient” compromises are given. Thus, the decision-maker is furnished with the best possible basis for selection of a final compromise. ( c ) In selecting projects at a given point of time, it takes account of future opportunities for resource allocation.
