Strategic Reliability and Preventive Maintenance

Abstract

Strategic reliability is defined as the product of availability, and the reliability over a fixed period of time x Preventive maintenance is performed after T p hours of continuing operation without failure. We have to choose T p so as to optimize, in case (i), the availability , and in case (ii), the strategic reliability . The exact solution for (i) was given by Morse and is briefly summarized. The exact solution for (ii) is derived. An approximate solution for (ii) is derived, and it is shown that the “optimum curve” commonly drawn for (i) may be used to solve (ii) approximately.
