Letter to the Editor---Queues with “Exponential-Type” Service-Time Distributions

Abstract

This letter describes the use of the expected number of units in the system (i.e., queue plus service facility) as a criterion to determine under what conditions a k -Erlang or hyper-exponential service-time distribution provides a better model than the negative exponential distribution. The models to be considered are those for a single service facility with Poisson distributed arrivals under steady-state conditions and with infinite queues permitted.
