Operations Research in the Health Services

Abstract

Some problems of the nation's health services---having to do with providing adequate care, maintaining hospital staff and facilities, and preserving or restoring financial stability---are described and classified according to social, economic, and organizational characteristics. The problems are then reformulated into areas for research. The research program formulation is based on the concept of a system in which a flow of demands arising from illness and accident is matched by a flow of specialized human and physical resources. Relating demands and resources gives rise to other problem areas of communication and organization. General references are made to current efforts of operations analysts in the health field, with examples of contributions from these efforts to the general body of knowledge in stochastic systems and decision processes.
