Abstract

This paper aims to analyze how the concentration of employment across Turkish provinces has changed between 1985 and 2000. First a beta convergence analysis of the provincial employment rates is performed. Then this model is extended in order to capture the spatial aspects of the employment dynamics, where spatial dependence is handled in alternative ways. Empirical results indicate that there is a divergent trend in total employment. In the second part of the paper, on the other hand, spatial variations in the relationships are examined with geographically weighted regression (GWR) to reveal some geographical variations in the results.
