Modernite ve Modernizm: Batı-İçi Bir Tartışma

Abstract

Modernite (modernlik) ve modernizm kavramları gerek sosyal bilim yazınında gerekse gündelik hayatta sıklıkla karşımıza çıkan kavramlar olmalarına rağmen, kavramların kuşattıkları anlam alanı ve birbirleri ile ayrıştıkları yönler hakkında yaygın bir kafa karışıklığı vardır. Söz konusu kafa karışıklığı birçok akademik eserde bile kavramların yerli yersiz, anlamlarına uygun olmayan bağlamlarda yahut birbirlerinin yerine kullanılması gibi karmaşık durumları ortaya çıkarmaktadır. Bu çalışmanın amacı "modernite"(modernlik) ve "modernizm"kavramlarının anlam alanlarınınfarklılaştıkları ve kesiştikleri noktaları açıkbirbiçimde göstermenin yanı sıraortaya çıktıkları tarihsel ve toplumsal bağlama işaret ederek, Batı-içi bir tartışma olarak özelliklerini açıklamaya çalışmaktır. Çalışmada, bu kavramlar çerçevesinde ortaya çıkan başlıca tartışmalar karşılaştırmalı analiz yöntemi ile incelenmiş, modernitenin, 19. yüzyıl sonrası Batı'nın tarihsel hikayesi olarak;modernizmin ise modernitenin kültürü olarak anlaşılabileceği ortaya konmuştur.
