Abstract

In recent years, but especially after the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic, as the global economy has become increasingly interconnected, the sustainability of global value chains (GVCs) has emerged as a necessary goal for both policymakers and businesses. The European Commission has recognized the importance of addressing the complex challenges faced by these global value chains, such as environmental degradation, social inequalities, and ethical supply chain practices. In response to these complex challenges, the European Commission has developed a series of strategies aimed at promoting sustainability and responsible business conduct within GVCs. This article aims to present the effectiveness of these strategies in achieving sustainability objectives and ensuring that consumers can trust that European businesses can compete in a global market while adhering to ethical standards. By examining the policies and initiatives implemented by the European Commission, this paper seeks to provide insights into the potential benefits and limitations of current approaches to sustainability within GVCs.
