The Sanctions Effect On The Trade Between The European Union And Russia

Trade is an important element of the European Union's economic position in the world. The EU is very well integrated into global markets both because of products manufactured inside the Union andbecause of the high level of exports. Trade policy is one of the most important pillars of the European Union's international cooperation, Since the beginning of Russia's invasion of Ukraine, the EU has played an important role in the imposition of sanctionsagainst Russia, implementing around half of the economic sanctions currently applied to Russia. These sanctions, together with the uncertainty generated by the current global economic climate, marked by systemic crises and the possibility of a pandemic revival and alsowith the pressure to stop economic exchanges with the Russian Federation, have led to a significant decrease in the bilateral trade between the European Union and Russia. This following paper aims to analyse the latest developments in EU-Russia trade, i.e. the evolution of the main groups of products imported by the EU from Russia, as well as the main groups of products exported by the EU to Russia, to highlight how sanctions have led to a significant impact on bilateral trade.
