Effects Of The Pandemic On Trade In Eu-27 And In Romania. New Strategic Orientations For The Common Trade Policy

Abstract

The health crisis caused by the COVID-19 pandemic has had an overwhelming impact on economic and social life in the European Union, while the political measures taken at European and international level as the three pandemic waves appeared were unprecedented. The pandemic is still active, in the mid-2021 and the possibility of a new wave in the autumn is increasingly wide. As a result, the effects of the pandemic can only be partially estimated. This article examines the effects of the pandemic on the European Union's international trade in a global context, with a case study – Romania, which carries out with the other EU Member States about three quarters of its foreign trade. For policy makers and groups of traders operating on a European/global scale, we also present in this article a synthesis on the European Commission's new strategic guidelines on trade, the changes that will take place in the Common Trade Policy, as a result of the European Green Pact, and the areas of European Union's action.
