The Circular Economy - A Strategic Pillar For A European Strong And Competitive Economy By 2030 – 2050

Abstract

The European Union is currently in transition from the linear model of economic development to the model of the circular economy. A first step was taken in 2014 through the adoption of the European Commission Communication „Towards a Circular Economy: A Zero Waste Program for Europe”, followed by the first Circular Economy Strategy. Subsequently, in 2019, the EuropeanCommission presented the European Green Deal, which refers to the circular economy, as one of the pillars of development by 2030-2050. The circular economy is relatively little known among entrepreneurs and even less so by consumers. Therefore, for the dissemination of information, in this article we present the results of our research on a) the reasons for changing the paradigm from the linear to the circular model of the economy, b) benefits and risks and c) the transition to the circular economy in the European Union. Ina case study we analyse the transition to the circular economy in the field of the European food system.
