Author

Abstract

The paper aims to review the historical path followed by the Russian Federation and by the Baltic States – Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania – from the initial stages of opening up to foreign direct investment (FDI) – after the collapse of the former USSR – up to the present stage, when capital flows have an essential role. We will also analyze the geopolitical factors that have marked the relations the Russian Federation (as investor) and Baltic States (as recipients of FDI), highlighting similarities and differences between the two group of countries, as well as opportunities and challenges revealed by the current economic context, culminating with the reciprocal economic sanctions imposed by EU and Russian Federation.
