Romania'S Relations With The United States And China From The Perspective Of The Sino-American Trade War

Abstract

Since 2018, the US has become more assertive in its relations with its partners, especially within NATO, directly and clearly calling for a certain attitude towards China in key sectors, especially those related to security issues. In general, Romania has a discrete approach to sensitive issues in bilateral relations, these being left outside the bilateral dialogue, to be addressed at the supranational and multilateral level. Similarly, in the case of the ongoing trade war between the US and China, Romania has no official position, except for the 5G issues. Through its neutrality, it seeks to pursue its own national interest, but taking into account the strong attachment to the EU and the importance given to the United States as a guarantor of regional security. In this context, this paper has as main objective the approach of Romania's position towards China and the USA from the standpoint of the trade war, focusing on three key areas concerning competition between the USA and China, namely: digital rivalry, trade and investments and connectivity.
