Eu Private Investments In Research & Development

Abstract

In the context of major mutations induced by new technologies, the role of research and development is becoming more important than ever. The present analysis of the R&D expenditures of the EU-based companies reveals a progress in the overall EU picture, but also the persistence of gaps within the member countries and the industries. Private R&D funding will not be enough to ensure the EU's competitiveness and to maintain the current European quality of life. Effective public policies are needed, and the renewed European Research and Innovation Agenda and the Horizon Europe research program for 2021-2027 are providing, at least theoretically, these premises.
