An Analysis Of The Current Determinants Of The Eu-China Strategic Partnership

Abstract

In a year in which the EU and China celebrate 15 years from the launch of their strategic partnership, the two sides seem more determined than ever to deepen and further develop it. However, the determinants of the complex and mature relationship between the EU and China are not only in the category of favorable ones, and the unfavorable factors are still a strong obstacle to deepening bilateral ties on a trustworthy basis. In this paper we analyze at the same time sensitive issues in the bilateral relationship, including the 16+1 cooperation platform, considered among Western European countries as a new way to enhance China’s influence in Europe, but also the “Trump factor” that creates the premises for a new Group of 2, EU and China which could replace the former G2, the US and the EU. It is a unique moment to strengthen the EU-China strategic partnership, and if both sides are equally ready for negotiation, concessions and new engagements, not only the bilateral partnership can be strengthened, but also confidence in multilateralism can be reactivated.
