Abstract

The present economic and geopolitical climate, defined by the polarization of systems in Western nations, has generated a significant impact on the globalization process, giving another direction to the world economy and politics. The recent international events (Brexit, the inauguration of Donald Trump as president of the US etc.) fueled the current of opinion that either a reversal of the globalization phenomenon is taking place at present or an approach to an updated phase of the process. Under these circumstances, this article aims to outline the main factors behind the escalation of anti-globalist opinions, to describe the lessons learned from the earlier crisis of globalization, as well as the challenges the European Union (EU) is facing and the optimal modalities to address them.
