Abstract

Industrial parks/areas are increasingly required to substantiate their environmental and sustainability performance with increasing pressures from both government and the community. In order to address these pressures the Kwinana industrial area in Western Australia has started the development of a sustainability roadmap centred on a set of sustainability indicators developed through proactive and collaborative engagement involving all the industries in the industrial park together with the local community. Many of the currently available sustainability assessment frameworks have been tested at a national, state or organisational level, but have not yet found application in industrial areas and so-called 'eco-industrial parks'. This paper discusses the early development of a sustainability roadmap for the Kwinana industrial area through the development of a matrix of sustainability indicators chosen and ratified by both industry players and the community hosting the industrial area.
