Abstract

The impact of using the building information modelling (BIM) methodology on the shortening of deadlines during design, specifically for projects related to assembly of pumps in industrial plants is analysed. The total development lengths of four detailed engineering projects, as well as those of their individual stages, were studied. Out of these four projects, two used BIM. Qualitative research was conducted through an individual study of each case and a comparative analysis of the results. A quantitative analysis of the performance behaviour of the total lengths of the projects and each stage was also conducted. Incidents that are responsible for an increase in the length of the construction project were also recorded, classified, and quantified. The results for the four construction projects studied did not show a decrease in the length of design deadlines using BIM. However, other advantages mentioned in the literature were obtained when BIM was used.
