Abstract

This study explored the practices, challenges, and benefits of sourcing products and services from small and medium enterprises (SMEs) for sustainable procurement in the Davao region. Employing a mixed methods approach, including key informant interviews and surveys with large firms and relevant stakeholders, the research explores their experiences and insights regarding effective engagement in sustainable procurement. The findings highlight the importance of partnerships, relationship building and trust, compliance and regulations, transparency and fairness, capacity building, and government support. Sourcing from SMEs goes beyond optimising the supply chain and brings about numerous advantages encompassing economic growth, social progress, and environmental sustainability. The study provides valuable insights for policymakers, businesses, and community stakeholders in fostering a socially responsible procurement system that supports local SMEs while embracing sustainable practices.
