Data procurement: a conceptual study from architecture, engineering and construction project perspectives

Abstract

Despite on-going technological and digital development, the characterisation of data procurement frameworks remains unclear from architecture, engineering and construction (AEC) project perspectives. To overcome these knowledge gaps, data procurement is characterised through a conceptual study. Contexts, features and relationships are distinguished from a scoping review. The emergent nature and development potential of data procurement are highlighted. Scope ranges from distinguishing data products, services and valuations, through to market establishment and institutional reform. For the commercialisation of AEC project data, the multiplicity, attribution and pricing of data are highlighted for further research. The research is anticipated to appeal to AEC industry researchers and participants, but also those in the data or digital commerce and business domains. For commercial decision makers, the premise exposes opportunities and implications of data. But it further pre-empts when adaptation ceases to be an aspirational option but becomes a competitive necessity or mark of public sector effectiveness.
