Abstract

NTNU is, in close cooperation with SINTEF, the leading technological organisation in Norway. To develop the University into an attractive alliance partner for the advanced manufacturing industry a large long-term research programme was launched during 1997. The programme was carried out with close cooperation between industry and academia, and had to focus on interdisciplinary activities involving the faculties of technology, social sciences and humanities at the university. In addition, the programme was aimed at an international academic level. Strategic priority research actions constitute the most significant multidisciplinary activity of Productivity 2005. The strategic research actions represent long-term competence development. In addition to technology, problems related to management and organisation development, economics, communication and cooperation, will be involved for all areas. The objective in this connection is to achieve learning organisations, and in addition form the basis for lifelong learning within the enterprises.
