Provocation: Business schools and economic crisis – Narratives, scripts and schools: counter-scripts as a response to the credit crisis

Abstract

Drawing on three different senses of 'script', I suggest two important and interconnected functions of business schools in the wake of the credit crisis. These relate to the role of business schools in analysing and representing society, as well as in preparing students for various roles in society. The credit crisis has surfaced some of society's scripts relating to consumption and made their limitations all too apparent. This is an opportunity for those of us working in business schools to enable students to identify such scripts and develop alternative formulas for action: counter-scripts.
