Optimal cutting parameters estimation to improve surface finish in turning operation in AISI 1045 using Taguchi's robust design

Abstract

This work is an attempt to identify the optimal parameters in turning operation using Taguchi's parameter design with the aim of to obtain smooth surface finish. The experimental studies were conducted by varying cutting speed, feed rate, and depth of cut in Kirloskar-Turnmaster 35, under dry cutting condition. The material used was alloy steel bar stock of AISI 1045. The cutting parameters were raised to three levels with L9 orthogonal array in the implementation of Taguchi method. In the application of Taguchi, the parameter levels were analysed in different levels such as minimum, medium and maximum. The response variable (surface finish) was measured through SURFTEST SJ-301-Mitutoyo and the data was collected as per JIS-B-0601-1994 standards. Three runs for each experiment was carried out and an average of the response is considered for the analysis in MINITAB 14.0 software. The outcome of the analysis indicates that the feed rate has significant role in producing lower surface roughness followed by cutting speed compared to the depth of cut.
