Observations on the realities regarding corporate social responsibility from the emerging economy of India

Abstract

India is a land of contrasts; India is home to the developed first world as well as the developing third world. India is now christened as an emerging economy. Present day India is also uniquely placed in the world economic landscape. If India grows economically (using conventional technology) as it is growing presently, mother earth would become warmer and help Global Warming! So India has to develop differently for the safe and healthy existence of the world. Thus the problems and challenges in front of India to develop are multidimensional. Business in India since 1991, the days post-liberalisation, globalisation and privatisation, is growing. What can business in India do? What promises can corporate social responsibility bring and deliver for India? This study based on the inputs from extant literature and added with the inputs from the in-depth interview of experts from the business sector, civil society and government officials capture the present context, unfolding new debates and bringing out emergent thoughts in this direction.
