Economic contribution of production and sales: an empirical study of the Indian automobile industry

Abstract

This study examines the segment wise contribution of production and sales of automobiles in the Indian economy from 2010-2011 to 2019-2020. The data for the study was compiled from annual reports of the Society for Automobile Manufactures, India Brand Equity Foundation, Ministry of Heavy Industry, various government reports, journals and newspapers. The contribution of the automobile industry is measured by applying compound annual growth rate. The results indicate that the production of the automobile industry in different segments showed an increasing trend. The passenger vehicles, commercial vehicles, three-wheeler and two-wheelers are growing at 2.9%, 1.3%, 4%, and 6.10% respectively. Similarly, the sales of the passenger, commercial, three-wheeler and two-wheeler are improving at 2.7%, 1.7%, 3%, 5.7% CAGR respectively. In the year 2019-2020, the production and domestic sales of the different segments of the automobiles industry declined steadily. The results of the present study will be beneficial for the automobile industry, government, policymakers and researchers.
