Research related needs assessment of Indian doctoral researchers: a thematic analysis

Abstract

This is one of the first Indian studies which look at the research related problems faced by doctoral researchers during their PhD journey. The aim of this paper is to determine the research related needs of the doctoral students in India and the steps taken by them to address the problem. A qualitative research approach in the form of an open ended questionnaire and convenience sampling was used to collect data from 50 researchers which included doctoral graduates from different Indian institutions. Indian researcher's perceptions were validated by the literature reviewed on the researchers abroad. Several findings were listed out after the thematic analysis which was validated by Nvivo. Furthering this research can lead to an increase in the efficiency and employability of the doctoral researchers in India. This can advance the innovation, research and development (R&D) and the economic sector of India.
