Age and job satisfaction: an empirical investigation among the pharmaceutical sales and marketing professionals in India

Abstract

This paper is an attempt to identify the age-related difference in job satisfaction among pharmaceutical sales and marketing professionals in India. Pharmaceutical selling in India is heavily dependent on direct selling, thus on its sales force, for all marketing needs owing to legal constraints. The pharmaceutical sales profession however has been seeing turbulent times due to high employee turnover. Job satisfaction, one of the most widely studied job attitudes, is a major cause for employee turnover. This paper examines the job satisfaction levels among pharmaceutical sales and marketing professionals in India in relation to their age and analyses the differences in job satisfaction with various facets of the job. The study thus can help line managers in pharmaceutical sales and marketing to develop suitable recruitment, retrenchment and job satisfaction improvement strategies for their employees on a contingent basis.
