Technology-based companies from the academy: the case of agronomy in Mexico

Abstract

Studies on technology-based entrepreneurship in developing countries are relevant considering that in these contexts companies face greater risks due to inadequate institutional frameworks. The objective of this research was to analyse the process of creation of ventures based on technological developments associated with agricultural universities in Mexico. The exploratory work was carried out through a study of multiple cases. The results suggest that the creation of these companies is not supported by institutional policy based on incentives but is driven by the individual initiative of the researcher from professional networks generated by academic practice. In conclusion, the externalities of academic activities together with an entrepreneurial profile allowed researchers to use their technological developments to obtain financing, take advantage of market opportunities, and create value through ventures.
