SMEs in Mauritius: economic growth, employment and entrepreneurial culture

Abstract

The present research seeks to analyse the contribution of SMEs to the Mauritian economy. There are around 124,000 SMEs operating in different business sectors in our economy. The Ministry of Business, Enterprise and Cooperatives of Mauritius launched a ten year plan in 2016 for the Small and Medium Enterprises so as to boost up economic growth and development. The research relies on existing statistics and also makes reference to some of the government and private firms' surveys carried out recently for the SME sector. The main objectives of the research are to link SME growth to macro-economic variables such as economic growth, unemployment and at the same time develop a better understanding of the causes of SME failures in Mauritius. The research also provides a description of the Mauritian entrepreneurial culture based on survey carried out by Mauritius Commercial Bank.
