Aggregate labour market matching in Poland

Abstract

I analyse aggregate labour market matching using time series research techniques. Point estimates are of main interest as they usually reflect dependent variable elasticities with respect to stocks and flows. Non-stationarity is rarely addressed, although existence of multiple cointegrating vectors hampers inference from a single equation analysis which is most usually applied. I refer to Poland in time span 1999-2013 using monthly registered unemployment data. Multivariate space approach indicates importance of unemployment variables and confirms that the unemployed influence more matching than discouragement. Vacancy inflow is more important than the stock. ECM models for stock-based, stock-flow and job queuing frameworks provide qualitatively coherent conclusions. Majority of matches originate from unemployment stock and vacancy inflow, but none of the mechanisms can be discredited.
