Supply chain innovation for short-life products: a preventive assessment of RFID deployment and implementation

Abstract

The aim of this article is to introduce a prescriptive framework aimed at addressing radio frequency identification (RFID) deployment and implementation by clearly identifying the practical steps that need to be undertaken in order to carry out a comprehensive preventive risk assessment from both a business and a technical perspective. Drawing on a broader research project on RFID aimed at supporting intelligent business networking and innovative consumer services, the development of the framework is informed by the authors' work in the preparation of a RFID-based application at an established grocery retailer for short-life products. From the research, it emerges that while the opportunities seem promising, there are also challenges to be met in both deploying and implementing RFID.
