Exploring safety compliance outcomes among healthcare professionals

Abstract

This paper reports on a qualitative analysis based on focus group discussions (FGDs) conducted to examine factors affecting safety compliance. FGDs were used to explore perceptions concerning healthcare of two private hospitals located in Penang and Perak, Malaysia. Self-determinant theory was used to bridge the study's development. These findings could assist hospitals to persuade staff to adhere to safety policies and combat the decline in the rate of non-compliance, as well as progress in patient safety. This study attempted to understand the safety and health risks of healthcare professionals. Some activities highlighted include control and continuous improvement in the form of nursing safety audits and improvement suggestions through the nursing safety committee, quality department and internal forums.
