Abstract

The plastic manufacturing sector is facing extreme pressure to become sustainable in the wake of growing consciousness towards the harmful effects of its supply chain operations on nature and society. However, the adoption of sustainability in the plastic supply chain is an arduous task because of the presence of several impediments. This paper provides a roadmap to Indian plastic manufacturing organisations for smooth adoption of sustainable supply chain practices by identifying 12 prominent barriers. These barriers were selected through literature review and views of specialists known to be working in the field for the past ten years. The mutual impacts between the barriers were found out using ISM-MICMAC method. The study reveals that lack of support and commitment from top management and lack of government interventions addressing sustainable practices are the most dominant barriers. The findings will assist the decision makers in making their firms sustainable by curbing the significant barriers.
