Analysis of Public Expenditure on Education: A Case Study of India

Abstract

Liberalization of the Indian Economy has ushered in an era of high growth in 1990s, but it has not helped in augmenting human capital as government expenditure hovered around 4% of GDP over the years. It is a well established fact that education expenditure has externalities and more so in a knowledge economy. Level of public expenditure on education affects efficiency both allocative and technical. In this context, the authors assess the public expenditure on education in India. They stress the need to increase the expenditure on education and improve the quality of education.
