Does Foreign Bank Entry Affect Operations of Domestic Banks? A Study on Indian Public Sector Banks

Abstract

This paper examines whether foreign bank entry affects the operations of public sector banks in India for the period 1996-2007. It studies how net interest margin, non-interest income, profitability, overhead expenses and non-performing loans of public sector banks are affected due to the presence of foreign bank. The empirical results reveal that increasing foreign bank entry is associated with increasing profitability, growing overhead expenses and rising non-performing loans in Indian public sector banks.
