Ensuring Accountability and Transparency in Development Activities at Grassroots

Abstract

Transparency and accountability in governance, an area receiving much attention among the policy makers, governance leaders and researchers as the new mechanism ‘Good Governance’, devised by the donor agencies for development, drives the societies to talk about it and act on it. The tone and tenor of the argument explicitly demands reduction of corruption and bring in efficiency in governance and administration with the ultimate aim of delivering the services to the people more effectively and efficiently. To push this dictum, the existing governance and administrative arrangements have to be changed and a new mindset and culture have to be created among the stakeholders. The existing governance and administrative arrangements have complicated and mystified the process and they are to be simplified and demystified. This article focuses on the important aspects namely, information distance and information seeking culture in the process of governance and administration and argues in favour of reforming governance and administration at grassroots with an objective of reducing corruption and enhancing the quality of governance and administration.
