Forest Resources And Public Policy In India: An Overview

Abstract

Forest, is an unknown domain—‘the jungle’—to most people. Increasing awareness about the changing environment and the role of forests in preserving and improving the environment, arouses their curiosity to know more about forests. An effort is made in this article to show forests as an invaluable national resource, their general distribution in the country, and their role in the environmental arena. The article also deals with the evolution of public policy in respect of forests since Independence: how this vital resource was initially under the exclusive state control, and how it is now being managed with community participation recognising people as important stakeholders. The article also hints at the challenges ahead, which the nation will have to contend with in the future.
