The Role of Universities in the Innovation Systems in the Developing Countries

Abstract

The objective of this study is to fill the knowledge gap concerning the role of universities in developing economies at a regional level. The paper explores the case of a technical university situated in a peripheral region and examines its role in revitalizing traditional rural industries. A total of twenty-two individuals were interviewed online and over the phone between April 2021 and November 2021. The findings show that through an intermediary organization called Rural Technology Action Group-North East, the Indian Institute of Technology Guwahati engages with regional stakeholders, including local communities, to co-create demand-driven rural technology and support regional innovation systems. It was also found that less sophisticated and intermediate technologies are crucial to rural economic development. The study proposed an interactive model for technical universities to respond to emerging societal needs and contribute to regional innovation systems, especially in periphery regions of developing economies. Policymakers can facilitate universities' participation in regional engagement by providing funding criteria.
